Short Video Activism <i>With</i> and <i>on</i> Douyin: An Innovative Repertoire of Contention for Chinese Consumers

This article examines consumer video activism tactics in China and their impact on Chinese consumers society. Drawing upon 56 semistructured interviews a case study analysis of online protest 2018, we argue that short-video-activism have become an innovative repertoire contention for Douyin, the “sister app” TikTok, has real-time updated database this repertoire. Using Douyin as study, it plays three key roles mediating activism: techno-cultural construct affords highly heterogeneous users to present everyday experiences via short videos; multisided market profoundly affects choose amplify voices; governing entity both moderates content its simultaneously is subject government regulations.
